“I’m not a drag queen. I’m a character actor.”
From the upcoming biography about Harris Glenn Milstead/Divine by Donnie, “Living Life in Cha Cha Heels”, he writes in the 1981 section of the book, when Glenn reconciled with his parents, “I also realized something about being with the two of them. I was part Dad; calm, collected, quiet, which is the side of me that’s Glenn, and the Divine side comes from Mom; laughing, cooking, being the belle of the ball. These two individuals who made me gave life to what I became, Glenn and Divine. I may be the only child they had that survived, but I was both of them, which made me very proud I didn't take after one or the other, but both, equally.”
From The Queer Bible essay, Sir Elton John wrote about Divine, “Divine was the best of us. He was so brave, unique, and fearless. He laughed in the face of a conservative society which ridiculed and rejected him.” “Divine’s fearlessness inspires me to this day. Divvy’s spirit will linger forever. Glenn was a lesson to us all.”
